a simple water sprinkler around the bird feeder will work wonders when the cats come around.
( motion detector adjusted for cat size )

they'll soon learn to avoid your yard .
That might work, but it may also scare away creatures that are SUPPOSED to roam freely at night. Plus I would have to buy a sprinkler and a motion detector.

I already own a humane trap.

I'll put it out during the daytime with some cat food so I don't have to deal with skunks, racoons or possums getting caught.

Unless you have authorization, it is illegal to relocate a feral cat or any wild animal, in Ontario. If you do trap an animal take it to your nearest Fish and Wildlife center. We used to do that with the squirrels around our place, before we had dogs.
Concerning the cats, you're best to participate in the TNR program.

No, I'll take them to the humane society like I have in the past.

This ain't my first rodeo.

These aren't feral. They're pets owned by people with no respect for their neighbors.

No problem. The trap is set. I have a timer to remind me to close it after dinner tonight.

This won't take long.

Christmas in July followed by Grinch in August.

Really? Who are the grinches? Those who feed and protect birds or those who let their animals kill everything they can get their claws on mostly for fun, shit in their neighbors flowerbeds and children's sand boxes.

We have cats. All are fixed and have shots up to date. They live inside.

I practice what I preach.
It would not happen with a dog because they are required to be licenced...not so for cats so, how do you identify the cat's owner?
If they are chipped, the owners can retrieve them.

If not, their owners should start by calling the humane society (if they actually care).

Not my responsibility to return them to their homes.

Yes, raccoons do eat birds. They are opportunistic omnivores, meaning they eat a wide variety of foods, and birds, especially their eggs and young, are part of their diet. Raccoons are known to raid nests for eggs and young birds. While they are more likely to target nests, they may also eat adult birds if they can catch them

Yes, skunks do eat birds, as they are omnivores with a varied diet. They will eat both adult birds and their eggs, especially those of ground-nesting birds. Skunks also consume a variety of other foods, including insects, small mammals, amphibians, and plant matter like fruits and nuts

Yes, opossums (also spelled possums, especially in some regions) are known to eat birds. They are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals, and birds are part of their diverse diet. Opossums are opportunistic eaters and will consume a variety of prey, including insects, rodents, frogs, and even carrion (dead animals)

What do you do if you trap a skunk instead of a cat?

Right, well, recently we have actually seen two cats stalking and hunting birds in our yard, and all of a sudden we're seeing dead birds left on the ground.

Skunks, racoons and opossums do NOT leave food to spoil, at least around here.

Nope, it's cats.
