I want something with double buckers and mahogany, like a Les Paul but not. I've done that and would like to try out something new. A couple of times over the last 5-6 years the Yamaha SG1820 has piqued my interests. I like the Made in Japan guitars and they seem to be using SD pickups.

What are the necks like? Where does it average for weight? Any other things I should know?

I like using Reverb for specs. You can find just about any guitar there, even if it has been sold.

I own one. Mine is 9.2 pounds, bit on the heavy side. I'd put the neck in between an R8 and R9, beefy but comfortable. I've owned a bevy of awesome boutique guitars over the years, and I'd put the quality of the Japanese Yamaha's against anything I've had. I currently have the SG1820, an SA2200, a Pacifica 1611 (the Mike Stern signature), and I've reserved the soon to be released Pacifica Professional strat. I still have a few others in the collection, but just about any time I head out to play I grab one of the Yamaha's. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks. I like the idea of the neck, that sounds very doable. Is it rounded or have any flat spots making it more of a D shape? I'm guessing "comfortable" probably means nicely rounded.

I was hoping for it to be lighter, my last R8 was 8lbs15oz and I want to make things easier on the back in the future.

Any idea on used pricing for these things? $1800-$2000? Does that sound reasonable?

It's a rounded profile. Shop in Edmonton I bought it from had two on the wall, mine was heavier so I'd say getting one in the 8 pound range is doable. Prices on absolutely everything are crazy now, these Japanese guitars are no different. I dropped $3500 on this one new, if it were to hit the forum I'd be wanting $2500. Could wait a while, but having a look at what everything else is going for now, it's not unreasonable. If you seen one for under $2k that's a great bargain. There's a terrific video of the factory in Japan making these guitars, the luthiers in there are doing amazing work.

I agree that the Yamaha SG1820 is of the highest quality.

used price of $1800-2000 is what I’d say these guitars are worth and then some but…… if you try and sell one good luck getting that and you might be waiting a long time to sell if you decided, but at $1800 used it’s well worth if your gonna keep as a player

There was a black one here in Edmonton just recently on marketplace listed for months. Started at $2000 and last drop I seen had it at $1700 for another couple months.

just tried to look and it’s not there now, I doubt it sold though guy probably decided that giving it away less than that was silly. Can’t blame him, total killer guitars
