I saw this on a banner ad on this site and it links to Musicians Friend. IMO this is the UGLIEST guitar I have ever seen, and the price is hideous as well. What would you even do with this? Put it in a display case and look at it?

The guitar's back & sides of rare pre-CITES Brazilian rosewood, is inlaid with spectacular watch gears cut from reconstituted stone, mother-of-pearl, bloodwood, Hawaiian koa and ebony. The equally spectacular soundboard inlays feature a minute track in mother-of-pearl, birdseye maple, flamed Hawaiian koa and ebony, and a pickguard with pearl inlaid watch gears. Yet another unique decorative detail is the triple-strand abalone pearl striping that bisects the length of each side, referencing the early Spanish-inspired instruments of C. F. Martin Sr. The maple bound ebony fingerboard showcases watch gear mechanisms with the highest level of delicate inlay art. Each guitar is furnished with a newly-designed wearable edition watch from RGM that references details from the D-200 guitar design and bears a matching serial number with each edition instrument. Lastly, each guitar comes in a premium aluminum Zero Manufacturing attaché case with a built-in hygrometer that allows the interior environment of the case to be seen without the need to open the case. Limited to no more than 50 highly-collectable pristine guitars, this instrument will be played and prized until the end of time.

My initial thought was perhaps they got the idea from RUSH.

Martin has make a few outlandish looking guitars with outlandish prices and have sold a few over the last few years. The first one they made was certainly different but looked much better than the one the OP posted. Say they have sold ten over the last few years. That is over a million dollars in sales and likely the cost to make it was under $10,000.00. People tend to forget that Martin, Fender, Gibson, PRS, Godin and all the other guitar manufacturers are not in business to make guitars. They are in business to make MONEY. They just use musical instruments as the medium to make that money.

Sometimes I read posts on here that really make me think. Sometimes I don't.

 

If it costs three cents to make a cupcake, and I pay a dollar, and I enjoy the cupcake - well I'm happy. Until some idiot tells me I overpaid by ninety-seven cents. Then I have to stop enjoying cupcakes and learn how to bake them. Because that will show the capitalists. And I'll never get to try a two dollar cupcake, because I might like it.

Just thought I'd share that, not that it has anything to do with this thread. Honest - it was just a random thought.

 

If we ever meet, I'll invite you to your dream $2 cupcake. And you can even splurge by choosing to get sprinkles on top. The works! I will spare no expense.

You guys laugh all you want but I think it’s the perfect guitar for anyone who ever faced the dilemma of choosing between a 67.5k$ watch and a 67.5k$ guitar.

i watched a video where Chris Martin talked about the guitar. It was to mark an anniversary, and to show off the skills of their luthiers.

It is an amazing piece of work. But the clockworks theme misses the mark.

 

My first thought was that some poor sap at Martin has to make that thing 50 times - and find a way to feel good about it.

 

Wouldn't all those inlays on the top and back affect the acoustic properties of the wood, and not in a good way? So less bass and/or overall volume vs a regular Martin.

Well, maybe for guitar player wanna be to hang in their living room to puzzle their dinner guests… :-/

This one is more art then guitar. I would not even say this is Martins strangest model, I am surprised no one mentioned the custom "Alien" acoustic they made years ago, or the DX420 guitar, the other strange printed top models, the old D-18E and D-28E, etc. You could go on and on.

 

Might go down well with the Steampunk crowd.
