Wow !!!! , seems like Colonial division is strong in Canada, like here in the US, but here it is the English- Spanish clash.

Hopefully, you folks can solve this issue in the cordial Canadian manner, that the World most admires .

Preserving French is not an attack on English
Kids in Quebec start learning English in grade school, my son started in kindergarten
Pretty much everyone in QC will tell you that speaking English is a pretty big plus
I do t consider preserving the french language as an attack on English but clearly these language policies are an attack on Quebec tourism and commerce. people are free to keep any cultural thing alive as long as it doesn’t impede others. I know lots of people steering clear of Quebec simply over things like travel because what if they have car trouble and no one will speak in English to them or if they wind up in a traffic accident and the police won’t speak it or the hospital won’t speak it.
unfortunately that’s the way the laws are written. Some will laugh and say oh that won’t happen BUT that’s the way the laws are written. people Can preserve their language, culture whatever but I shouldn’t be involved or have to hear about it 24/7

Went to college with guys from the James Bay region. They have to know French, English and Cree. They have been denied service for not speaking French at hospitals, licensing and restaurants. The government has stripped them of their right to tax free purchases unless they can prove they reside on a reserve and the item is only going to be used where they reside. Which is pretty much in the middle of no where. The French make their mission to fuck over Natives and English speaking Canadians at any possible opportunity.Hell i was in Walmart the other day and noticed all the french labels were facing out rather than the english side.

Oh, the humanity!

How does one survive such suffering?

Anecdotal stories have been blown out of proportion
Most people will be happy to at least try to speak to you in English, especially if you have the proper attitude
This has been my experience in Quebec. People are always happy to help and speak to me in English if they are able. I speak as much French as I am able but I'm not great at it.

Never had any problems. My French sucks, but I try and I've never been met with any negative attitude. I feel bad for people who are afraid to travel anywhere they don't speak English - half a world out there they'll never see.

Isn't Canada a bilingual country ? Off the top of your head, name 10 cities outside of Québec where I'm 100% sure to be served in French, by the police, in hospitals, diners, by bus drivers, at the bank, etc. Any of that doesn't deter me from travelling anywhere. I learn the language of where I'm going, simple courtesy. But that's me.
