Well, at first 5 was the right amount because that was the space I had on my rack, but I bought another rack, so that number became 10. Now I have 19 I think? with the rack space for 20, but I’m considering pairing down as I’m starting to feel like a hoarder, but also really want a korina Frank Bros and an SG, so I guess I really have no effing clue what the number is.

OMG I don’t even know how to answer that one! My playing needs and desires have changed over the years and continue to do so, however my answer for many years was “just one more”. Realistically though I’ve always managed quite well with 3-5, though the number is heading north of that again.

Totally expected variations of the "one more" answer
And there is truth to that

had people ask me last time I moved--how many guitars do you need--and I just said "One more"--I think they got what I meant.
Since moving I have more and bass and a mandolin...

Well I will join in I currently have 24 and another one just waiting for parts and then 25. Do I need that many hell no. It is the want thing that obviously gets me. What it boils down for me is I love guitars. I'm a fender stratocaster guy they are easy to modify and change up looks and sound easily. I recently got into building part casters cause I have alot of parts and why not. I keep saying this is the last one ya right. If you enjoy it and ofcourse can afford it then there ya go.

My friend Ed has an interesting theory.

Bare minimum for a working guitarist:

1 single coil setup a la Fender
1 humbucker a la Gibson
1 hollow body
1 good acoustic
1 pawn shop special (ugly, but you love it and can do anything you want to it)
1 not a guitar (some other instrument to put you in a different mindset, bust ruts and make you more hire-able)

So a bare minimum of 6

Then there are the supplementary lists:

For example: if you are gigging heavily, you should really have a 7th, which is a backup to your main axe. Something similar enough sonically to get you through a gig, but different enough to give you an option in the studio. I.e. If your main axe is a Strat, get a Tele.

Maximum sonic bang in as few cases as possible.
