I counted the ones that I have actually used for shows over the years. I think 10 is a good number.

32 (apparently). But I think the minimum number for me might be five

1. An acoustic
2. A Les Paul with humbuckers
3. A Les Paul with P90s
4. A 24 fret SG
5. A 335

 

Guitars are like women. One is plenty but plenty is never enough.

 

I am going to go with 6 or 7 and when I scale down I should have a better idea if my guess is correct.

 

One is enough, yet also .. not enough.

 

I'll go with 50. But 50 good ones. If they're crappy you'll need at least 200.

 

I keep it around 8-10, then when I want something new I can trade/sell one towards a new one

12, I have had as many as plus 30, and as little as 1 twice in my life. 12 covers every style I would play, and gives me 2 classicals, and 1 of each other type I would need including a resonator and a 12 string.

 

I've come to realize that it really doesn't matter which guitar I pick up, I always sound like me. Seriously.... I sound the same whether it's a Tele, a partscaster superstrat, or a full hollow jazz guitar.

So, at the risk of becoming a pariah, the right number is one guitar each.

Well, at first 5 was the right amount because that was the space I had on my rack, but I bought another rack, so that number became 10. Now I have 19 I think? with the rack space for 20, but I’m considering pairing down as I’m starting to feel like a hoarder, but also really want a korina Frank Bros and an SG, so I guess I really have no effing clue what the number is.

Well....I have 4 and that just feels right.

5 might be even nicer, apparently.
