Hi Thornton - can you tell me when Hagstrom serial # 611397 was built? I don't know much about it except that it is a red bass guitar. It was my brother's and he passed away recently. Found it while going through his things. Thanks in advance, John

John, my condolences I recently lost a very special person in my life so I understand your loss.

Your brothers Hagstrom bass was made in production run 611 which produced 500 basses. The run commenced in 1964 and concluded in 1965, his bass was the 397th made in the run during 1965.

Thank you Thornton!

I have a 1970s Hagstrom HIIN Serial Number 820499; I was wondering whether anyone can assist me with a trusrod adjustment instructions and let me know where to obtain an appraisal
viclobocga, Hagstrom's truss rod adjustment works the same as most every other guitar manufacturers truss rod system. To tighten or raise the neck up to the strings turn the rod clockwise, to loosen or lower it turn the rod counterclockwise.

Lots of videos on YouTube showing how to make the adjustment.

BTW, your H-II-N was made in 1971. For an appraisal you should take it to a vintage guitar shop if possible otherwise check Ebay and Reverb to see what the asking and selling price currently is for a
H-II-N. Good luck.

Hello! The first guitar I ever bought (in 1991 when I was 13) was this Hagstrom Swede, serial: 797164. I've been trying to decipher that serial number ever since. Could you please help me, Thornton?

I scanned through every post to make sure my question wasn't already answered. In doing so, I read some genuinely thoughtful and kind responses from Thornton Davis. In addition, the fact that he takes time out of his day to help us, just as a courtesy, is remarkable. I appreciate you, TD! Thank you!

Troutfur,

Thx for your kind words I’m only to happy to provide information to vintage Hagstrom owners.

As for your Hagstrom, serial number 797164 it’s an identified in the production records as being a L.P. Made in production run 797 in 1971. That run produced 200 L.P. Guitars with yours being the 164th guitar made in the run.

The first 3 production runs of 455 Swede guitars made in 1970 and 1971 were identified as L.P. before the name was changed to Swede later in the year.

Hello - I recently bought a Hagstrom Scandi in Copenhagen. The guitar looks to be all original parts, it has the "made in sweeden" stamp on the back of the body near the neck, tuning knobs made in west germany and the headstock just says "hagstrom" with the "Scandi", which leads me to believe it is an earlier model. The guitar however doesn't have a serial number. Are you aware of any Hagstrom Scandi's without a serial number and why this might be?

Thanks so much for your insights! The guitar plays great and I love it. Very versatile.

Hello Thornton, I recently bought a Hagstrom HG801 special. Serial number is 809025. If you are able to identify exactly when this was made, and/or where it has been that would be much appreciated.
User2, Your HG801 which is actually a H-II-N was made in production run 809 in 1971. That run produced 200 H-II-N guitars with yours being the 25th to have been made in the run.

Looking through the production records it lists only three production runs of Scandi's. Run was 022 which commenced in 1977 and concluded in 1978 producing a total of 247 Scandi's.
Run 011 produced 10 left handed Scandi's made in 1977. The final run produced 408 of them for a grand total of 665 Scandi's being made.

The Scandi was also know as a Hagstrom H-III. It was Hagstrom's answer to the Fender Stratocaster.

I'm not aware of any Hagstrom's leaving the factory without a serial number. Even all of the prototype instruments had a serial number given to them. Hagstrom prototype instruments have a serial number that starts with 500 regardless of whether it's a guitar or a bass.

Hi Thornton, kudos to you and the great work you are doing here! I have a Hagstrom Viking S/N: M06091192. Would you be able to find out any information on it? I have a feeling it may be a Chinese reissue guitar made in 2006? Much appreciated!

Laurence, you are correct. Your Viking is a Chinese reissue. It was made in September of 2006.

Hey, Thornton. Do you know if the pots in my LP were originally/supposed to be Linear or Log? I've been hitting old threads and doing research for a very long time, but I get conflicting information that's a bit difficult to decipher.

Sorry if I missed the answer somewhere on the site.

I have a habit of picking up old instruments that are difficult to research (most recently an Ovation Preacher Deluxe 12 string; repairs on the tone pot have been... even more difficult to research those pots...)

Thanks for any help you have to offer in regard to the Hagstrom LP pot tapers.
