Playing it at 0.5W is great for the studio, but to get where it starts to growl, close to 5, is too loud. I'll go deaf before long. Using the lower setting at 0.2W is too quiet. I love to physically feel the sound waves.

Shield the amp behind something ? Put it in another room ? Blanket over it ? Use dirt pedal at desired volume ?

That's the issue, yup. How do you get a sound that is not too loud but loud enough that it moves some air. The attenuation steps on the TMDR are at the end of the day pretty limited. Any amp with a master volume and OD pedal (or channel) offers nearly infinite combinations of gain and volume.

Happy hunting.

I said moving air, but I probably meant cooking (virtual) tubes. Past 5 on the volume dial, it starts to be more throaty, rich, (what's the word?). I'll try to get something close, at lower volume, with a dirt pedal, or compressor, or booster, or ...

Curious. Guitar model and pickups? Pickups in full volume mode?
Using a Schecter Blackjack, Les Paul style with two volume and one tone, with the DRTM allows blending the two pickup volumes with three way switch in centre position projecting the audible sound with ample volume. Additionally tilting back the amp has improved the delivery. Even without a master volume control the frequency range of the bass and treble of the DRTM using Ch1 or 2 on reverb channel provides controlled output. Possibly my level of deafness assists.
