I get a lot of heart rate monitors when I google BPM. Maybe you can use something like that.

If you put a drum trigger on the snare or the bass drum you can use that.

The one you found seems to be the only good free app.

I'm sure I recall a BPM monitor in those old Electronics kits. It might be easy to make one.

Behringer has beat counters built into some mixers ($150), they also had a stand-alone beat counter. Someone says they suck.
