Taylor 510 dread with 0,0125 strings paying attention to fret just behind, almost on the fret… :)
It’s been awhile since I reached for my old Slingerland Golden Hawiian parlour guitar from the 1930’s. (Several months actually!…) 😬
I picked this up via a Kijiji parking lot meetup a few years ago; it’s in remarkably good shape given its age. The vintage look and woody tone oozes mojo!
However, this ol’ girl is pretty much a slide-only guitar as the action is very high and the intonation is therefore quite sharp as you move up the fretboard. The ‘mother of toilet seat’ pearloid treatments on the fingerboard make it near impossible to perform a neck reset, so ‘delta blues’ it is!!…

Same as yesterday but with a new mod to the Gibson that had been on my « to do list » for too long since I would postpone that to the moment the EXP strings should be changed (but they are apparently not on the verge to show any sign of aging !), so I did change the nut for a larger bone one (to extend the string spacing) yesterday. The neck tolerated that change from the 1,725 in. Gibson standard to a larger spacing of some 1,5mm : That little difference clearly benefits my fretting fingers while playing ! :)

The bride bought this for me in 2008. After years of being my backup 6 string, it became my lesson guitar, and like the lesson guitar before it, it's getting kind of banged up. Those little bumps on my desk, stand, chair, stand, etc really add up.

Yesterday I was privileged to play a 1955 Martin D-28 that my luthier is preparing for sale by one of his other customers. Provenance and mojo to burn!…

The Gibson L-OO TV and the Seagull Performer : Very different but sounding quite alike… ;)

I do not remember comparing the Huss & Dalton Crossroads and Seagull Performer before : Gee !!! Sound more alike than the Gibson L-OO TV. 😳

Yop ! I am preparing for another Spring clearance since maybe I do not need those three now that I finally put a larger nut on the Gibson and the M-36 still runs in my tormented mind. Now, would I donate the Seagull to a grand-nephew or sell the Huss & Dalton worth five times the Seagull ? 🤔 I will have to make my mind this week…
The Huss & Dalton and the Seagull again : The Seagull sounds muddier and darker than the H&D,,,
The Beneteau 6 string, and the House slothead, for a little recording. Recorded a little pennywhistle as well, but I'll replace those parts using a better whistle that my bride brought home for me this afternoon. Had the Cox mandolin in hand for a bit but I was getting too tired to be very creative.

Played my 2022 Southern Jumbo this afternoon alongside my dad on his 1957. 65 years between them and both sounded really good.

Martin Custom 000. The reps (Martin and dealer) claim the the hide/vintage glue used makes a big difference.

Needed to hear a different tone : Collings OM1…
And could not resist playing also the Huss & Dalton Crossroads !

I noticed it is easier to palm mute near the bridge on the shorter Huss & Dalton, I mean palm muting while fingerpicking over the sound hole since it is nearer to the bridge.

The H&D appears to me to sounds better on Country Blues while the Collings is more melodic. ;)

Alternating between the Gibson, the Huss & Dalton and the Seagull, paying attention on tone, playability and comfort while working on a new arrangement of «J’ai quitté mon ile« : Abuse of ornamentations could make more harm than good... ;)
Got a Martin D-X2E I haven;t played in about a year. Still fills the room.

Played the same Seagull, Gibson and Huss&Dalton for almost two hours playing fingerstyle versions of many pieces from the pop/folk and jazzy repertoires : The more I play, I feel the heavier Seagull more comfortable since its weight help it stay on my hip while the very light
L-OOs could slip. The Gibson neck is flatter than the others while the modified V of the H&D neck is more comfortable than the bolder Seagull neck. Finally, the tone of the Seagull is pleasing my ears the best of the three. Oh, man, what do I do with those four grans L-OOs ! 🤔 Have to challenge the M-36 before any crucial decision… ;)

Took the Martin OODB and as soon as I began to play Windy & Warm came the feeling it sounded quite like the Seagull Performer ! Took the Seagull and then played both OO models back to back. It turns out that the Martin delivers rounder and bassier sounds though similar tone and projection.
The Seagull Performer is really a good acoustic guitar ! :)
The Martin OODB again, then the Martin OOO-18 and the Huss&Dalton Crossroads : The H&D incorporates a small bell like sound compared to the OOO-18 and both sound clearer than the OODB.
