I always keep one at hand just in case so that I can ship within a day or the same day when I sell a guitar.

I buy a new guitar before I sell the old one. I use the shipping box that comes with the new one.

Local L&M too but they weren't very helpful. Just told me to dig through the bin.

Yes, hit your local L&M -- you may have to time this to their shipment arrival day, as the ones here are pretty quick to flatten/crush the boxes for recycling! Usually I just call the manager (who I know well for a long time) with a request to put one aside and then find out the opportune time to retrieve! Also, a bike shop often has reasonable-sized shipping boxes.
