Lotta people ignore the main news channels these days - sometimes I can't blame them!

For those who get their news here, there's an especially-nasty computer virus going around, locks up your files and demands ransom for them. Some big (and you'd-think sophisticated) systems have been hit, more than 200,000 PC systems around the world as of yesterday.

Microsoft patched the hole used by the virus back in March, and has just announced its firm determination that the hole was discovered and basic mechanics for the virus developed last year by the U.S. government's National Security Agency in the U.S. They intended to use it for spying purposes, looking into people's computers. However the NSA's own systems were hacked earlier this year and this (and other similarly-dangerous back-door hacking software) was stolen from it and adapted into ransomware virus.

Update your operating system and anti-virus software. Be on extra alert for suspicious things in email and on web sites. And thank the lord that the NSA is out there to serve and protect us all.

I also decided to unhook my external hard drive with pictures on it until this has blown over. If they want to encrypt my operating system it's a lot easier to fix than trying to decrypt pictures

A report from Reuters summarizes some of the U.S. government's efforts to create offensive software weapons to use against citizens and enemies.

First given widespread attention by Edward Snowdon in 2013, the offensive (rather than defensive) efforts have reportedly consumed about 90% of the cyber-activities of the CIA and NSA, with only about 10% of their activities devoted to defensive knowledge and tools. Along the way, these agencies found or purchased from hackers and kept secret for themselves a bunch of vulnerabilities in critical hardware and software systems used around the world, and developed tools to exploit them, leaving everyone in the world vulnerable to attacks.

One of their tools, hacked from the NSA earlier this year, has been modified into the WannaCry virus that has already taken down systems around the world.

yeah, because norton and macafee are gonna save everyone /sarcasm

i don't even bother running anti-virus software, and haven't for years and years. it's completely fucking useless. besides, if you have just one ounce of common sense when searching for free porn, you know how to steer clear of the b.s. aside from that, you're not going to get hacked hanging out here or anywhere similar.
i can't tell you how many times i have seen buddies with multiple virus' on their machines, the anti-virus software humming away, blissfully unaware, with a dilligent look on it's face.
boot into safemode, run trend micro housecall, clean your registry after, then run ccleaner when you go back to normal boot. fixes 99% of any b.s. i've encountered, including those ridiculous anti-virus viruses

The way I see it, all anti-virus' will let you down eventually. The only safe bet is a back up and reformatting if you get hit. If you use an anti-virus, use a decent free one.

well, to be honest, i've never looked for hamster porn, so i don't know if they have any. but they have plenty of the standard fare, and some fetish stuff, although, as with the hamsters, i don't know how deep the rabbit hole goes, if you know what i mean. my tastes are rather common. my actual life is weird enough, without tentacle porn and some of the other things i have heard about.

I think you have to open an email attachment to get infected, as well as not having the Windows patch. Be vewy vewy careful....

Most of these virus' get access to pc's when links or files get opened. We've had 3 attacks here at work over the past 5 years or so. People keep opening files and links they shouldn't even after being told multiple times. I make sure there's a nightly backup done so they may lose only a few hours work at the most. The virus will travel through and corrupt all local files along with any network files the user has access to. We are using Sophos Endpoint Protection along with Cisco Amp which does a great job of preventing attacks.

So, don't open anything you think is not legit.

It's a real treat when you find out one of these idiots gave up their network password. *#*(
