I have an early 80's Boss Super Overdrive SD-1.
There you go, you've already got a great tool for the job. Drive down, volume up into a edge of breakup or already overdriven tube amp works great.

SD1 and a TS9 are very similar circuits and you should be able to get great results without buying anything.

Yep, what they said.
  • Klon (Soul food, Tumnus, Creme Brûlée)
  • Boss SD-1/BD-2
  • Ibanez Tube Screamer
  • OCD
Good luck down the rabbit hole Mark.

Far as I'm concerned you already have one of the best pedals available in the vintage SD1.
You say you want blues.
There's not much available that is as transparent when compared to the amount of gain provided.
Only thing I can think is to find the earlier version; the original OD1 from the 70s.
The original Tube Screamer, the 808, was a variation on the OD1 but it lost transparency in the process of making more gain so it's a bit more opaque.
I guess it's a matter of how much transparency you want. Stevie loved the 808.
You say you want a tube overdrive but it doesn't have to have a tube in it.
By presumption I assume you want to push your front end harder so maybe what you really want is a clean (ish) boost?
If that's the case I might suggest an EP Booster as it mostly softens the sound while boosting the lows and smoothing the highs and pushes the preamp hard.
It pushes hard because even at the lowest volume setting it's still a touch hotter than unity.
Blues heaven maybe?

I don't plan on getting rid of the SD-1, had it since I was a kid. I have dialled up some great sounds over the years.

So I spent hours on YouTube checking out all your suggestions and was leaning towards a Fulltone OCD. I went on Kijji locally trying to find one used and came across a Goudie FX 808+ TS at a reasonable price. I remember reading on this forum posts from years ago beating down this pedal because it was copy of of the OCD. I got to thinking the OCD is a copy of the Ibanez 808 TS?

So I bought it, thanks for all your suggestions, there was some great pedals suggested. Lol

I am really impressed with this Goudie!

I did have an Ibanez TS probably early 90's vintage but I was not driving tubes and speakers. I had a peavey bandit.

Plus some of my memory of that time in my life is a bit vague?

Gain staging for me. I’d have a clean boost slamming the front end of a transparent OD. Like a keeley katana into a timmie, or a fat boost, depending on the sound your trying to achieve. If your trying to get a organic tube breakup, I would gain-stage. If your going clean platform and wanted a Plexi type breakup I like the tchula gold - love pedal.

MXR micro amp is a great pedal of your looking to save money. I’d even hit it with a clean boost.
