Genius or ???????

I watched this documentary and other than the guys total honesty in his lyrics, I don't see where the "genius" part comes into play. From what I understand he could play the piano quite well, couldn't really play guitar, wasn't a very good singer and his songs were basically stories like anyone elses.

Did I miss something???
