I just read about this a few minutes ago and to say I was surprised would be
an understatement. Check this out.

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmers surprising announcement.

Today Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Chief Executive Officer Steve
Ballmer have announced plans to make previous versions of the Windows
operating system freely available from the Microsoft website. First to be
offered will be Windows 95. When asked why Bill Gates said; "Well, we've
seen open source software become better and better over the years and there
are applications such as Open Office, The Gimp and many others that are as
good, if not better, than commercially available software."

Steve Ballmer replied; "This is one of the reasons why we're making Windows
freely available. We'll also be releasing a developers kit so people can
customize whichever version of Windows they download to their liking."

To which Mr. Gates added; "We'll be releasing each Windows version on a 3
month basis. This time around it will be Windows 95 and in July, Windows 98
will be available for downloading. We'll also be providing the professional
and NT versions on the website."
"We're calling it 'Windows Your Way'." added Mr. Ballmer. "Windows XP, Home
and Professional versions however, won't be available until January of 2008,
6 months after Windows 98."
When asked about Windows Vista, Mr. Gates replied that he doesn't forsee it
being freely available until at least a 3 to 5 year waiting period.

BTW when the installer is run it lets you pick and choose what you do and
don't want to install. The downloads are split up so even people with a 56k
modem won't have many problems downloading. For some reason it isn't on
Microsofts frontpage so I did a little digging around and found where it is.
I had to use TinyURL as the link is a little long. Here it is:

Still though- Microsoft could give away their stuff away for free and people would still find something to complain about. Hilarious.

You're absolutely right about that. Glad you like the joke. I've had that one in mind for quite awhile.
