I know copper foil is recommended, but can I use tin? I have a roll of tin tape and thought I had heard somewhere that this can be used for sheilding.

Any conductive material can be used as long as its grounded to your jack ground. Copper is used because it is easier to solder. The copper shielding tape you buy also has conductive adhesive and the tape you have probably does not. I also use the shieldin paint from stewmac. Shielding is useless if the signals are not grounded out.
