Good morning. I've been working on some 3d models for different types of guitars. A friend of mine wanted me to cut him a body for an SG build he is doing and I thought I might as well build 1 or 2 for me. I generally build a couple bodies and necks when doing something new, just so I can test and not screw up the "good" wood.

I am a hobby guitar builder with lots of experience with 3d modeling so CNC became a natural fit for me. I am relatively new to a software called Fusion 360 which designs, renders, documents, and creates the CAM required for CNC. It is simply awesome, for my use.

I always start with a 3d model. This time a friend was nice enough to already have modeled a 1961 Gibson SG (Les Paul JR) body. I took that modified it to start what will become a SG Standard model. I've also started to model components so the model looks like a finished guitar. Here is the model I started with.

I'll be watching this. Love SG's .. well, double cuts in general.

I may have posted this pic in another one of your threads.
With you skills, I'm sure that you could replicate this Ex Nihilo?
I missed the chance of grabbing this due to my sitting on the fence for too long.

Yeah - I've seen this. It's definitely an interesting build. I'd be interested at taking a closer look at it. I remember when Scott was building it and I thought it would be extremely difficult to merge the maple and mahogany with the binding in between.

I never thought that the "uncanny valley" phenomenon/principle would ever apply to guitars, but this is a textbook case, at least for me. Here it's not a case of an android looking aaaaallllllllomost human, but not quite. Rather, it looks aaaaallllllllmost SG AND Les Paul, but not quite. Unsettling.

He needs to trademark or copyright or whatever it is you do with original designs. This is just a fantastic looking guitar, that could be a long term asset for him... IMHO...

I think that would be pretty tough considering he took a Gibson LP and a Gibson SG and put them together. If Gibson couldn't trademark or copyright either of these designs, I doubt Scott could do it. I like the design though but again that binding is problematic on so many different levels.

You could start a new thread about this guitar, if you want. There are 9 posts in this thread and 6 are about this guitar. I didn't build it and I do not particularly like it. I would appreciate it if you removed them actually. Sorry to be a jerk about this but... Thanks.

Regards Peter.

My apologies Peter. I didn't mean to derail.
You showed interest in it, thought it might give you ideas.
NP - this will be a very standard SG build. Other than the wood choices, possibly.

So a friend of mine had a 1965 SG at his place and I took that opportunity to take some measurements and adjust my model.

It's amazing how thin these guitars were / are. I can see why they are prone to neck diving. I will make a couple of models with different designs that I have seen. For instance the 65 I saw had a swimming pool route for the control cavity as opposed to the route that seems to follow the pots a little closer.

I also changed the wood colour as the darker wood makes it more difficult to see the design. I have a bunch of maple that I cut from a neighbour's tree a few years ago and I will cut a test body from that.

Here is the back -

Have you tried Vectrics Aspire software? I have some experience with it and Artcam.

Aspire | Vectric
Yes my first CNC machine was a CNC Shark Pro and it came with Vcarve Pro and Cut3d. It worked quite well but I had some issues with it and every time I went on the Vectric forum the answer was to spend more $$$ and buy Aspire. Even if the problem had nothing to do with a different software. I use Fusion 360 which is much more powerful and very intuitive. It's also free. I can also do design / renderings / animations / and CAM. It is also cloud based so I can use it on any computer and even have apps for my Iphone and Ipad. It's simply amazing.

P90's and a wrap tail would be pretty sexy!
That would be cool. I build an LP JR style guitar with a P90 and a wrap tail. I've modeled two humbuckers and will probably stick with that. I also have a Bigsby B50 so I may put that on. I was playing around with Fusion and modeling some accessories. I really like the way this software works.

Here is a drawing from the document creation part -

I also modeled up a neck -

and a fret board and some components.

Just playing around really. I'm not really sure how helpful this is although it's good to put the pieces together to see if they work. I usually do 2d Cad drawings with AutoCAD as this is the software where I am most comfortable. The rendering part is also kind of cool. I definitely have to spend more time with it but it's pretty simple.

It also does the CAM all in the same application, so if I change anything all the objects automatically update. Here are all the toolpaths required.
