Can a 'conversation' be removed? Possible scammer. jamiemarc930

I was contacted based on my WTB post for a Larrivee by 'jamiemarc930' and an aol email. I did respond to that and ended up with other emails from him. Said he was in Alaska. After a couple of back and forth emails I ended it 'cause it did seem like a scam of some sort.

I now do not see his initial 'conversation' that he posted to me.

For the OP and anybody else who's been ripped off, I feel your pain. This is why I don't use Reverb or eBay. I don't even use this forum. I will not buy anything from an individual without holding it in my hands first. It is my personal policy and I will not deviate from it. It became my policy after being burned a couple of times. Thankfully on lower cost items but the lesson was still learned. I will still buy from a well known and reputable retailer over distance but not from an individual. I have also, on rare occasions, sold gear to an individual over distance but not because I advertised outside of my local area. They asked me to ship. As for buying, if it's too far for me to justify driving to see it then it was never meant to be mine.

Ita funny, I would whole heartedly agree with what you say other than this forum. For reasons I cannot comprehend I dont even batt an eye at sending money to members on the hope and a prayer something comes back :)

Before eBay and PayPal, I did about 5 transactions by money order with perfect strangers for hard-to-find items and I only got burned once on a $200 drum that was damaged and not as advertised (I was able to re-coup some of it on re-sale). On eBay, I did about 150 transactions and only got slightly burned on one item that had damage not in the description (which I was able to fix). I think that the eBay and PayPal infrastructures provide good protection for buyers, but I never bought anything over $600 and never sold anything at all.

As for this Forum, I had 2 good interactions as a seller but I did so in person, which I think is safer for both parties. I think that without any outside protection or arbitration, that is the best way to go. You still need to use some common sense and judgement. I had another ad where someone contacted me the day they signed up and only had 3 posts (and none since), so I chose to ignore it. If they had been a long-time member with a verifiable history, I would have responded without hesitation. Long-time members on this forum are stand-up people.

I forgot that I did one time sell something as a result of posting it for sale here. That was a few years ago and it was not a sale to a member of this forum but a member here did PM me and ask for my email so his friend, not a member, could contact me about the guitar I posted. That said, in my world buying from a distance is a different thing than selling from a distance. I don't ship until the money is in my bank account and I won't pay until the item is in my hands. I feel certain you fellows are probably correct and that most of the members here are stand-up guys but I don't deviate from my personal policy for any reason. If that means I miss out on something nice then so be it. I can live with that. GAS does not have the control over me that it once did.

I'm looking at buying something too far to drive. The guy says he has PayPal but never uses it for selling. He will ship and do bank transfer. I said back I will pay all paypal and shipping fees. Nothing back so I am not about to send e transfer.

I’ve had great experiences both as a buyer and seller on this forum. Even made a few friends because of it. I will add the caveat that I’ll only deal with someone either way who has an established history/presence as a member here.

I’d love the luxury of doing local only deals for everything but Winnipeg is a small pond and the next closest city is almost 6 hours away (Regina). There’s some stuff that simply will not sell here.

Getting scammed is painful, so sorry that happened to you.

I've been very successful buying from this site, eBay, Reverb and even Kijiji.
I had a deal go sideways on eBay and was refunded in hours.
Reverb and eBay have a no tolerance policy and it works

Well I called the RCMP back after a few months. They are still working on it. Trying to examine bank records and such. Bit of paperwork involved to do that. Thank you all for the encouraging posts.
