Maybe guitars Canada should make members have 1000 posts before they can post on the for sale section...
I know another gear forum I follow has a rule where users need to have 50 posts before the classified section unlocks. I think that's definitely reasonable as it demonstrates a level of commitment to the community before being able to trade.

Then he would only accept etransfer. No PayPal. 2nd telltale sign... he even did the same as your guy. Sent me pics of his drivers license & some other ID card to show he wouldn't rip me off. Hmmmm...My Spidey Senses were REALLY tingling now! I said- "Okay. Send me a pic of you holding the guitar"....Crickets! I KNEW IT! SCAMMER!!!!
I reported it here right away & Jay banned him
If I sold you a guitar here, I would not accept Paypal, and you wouldn't be getting a copy of my drivers license. I don't think these are necessarily signs you're being scammed.

As a buyer, I have done a Zoom call to chat with the seller and virtually check out the goods. Also happy to accept a LinkedIn invite and provide references from other forum members.

There is always a risk, no matter how reliable someone has been in the past. You need to assess your own risk tolerance. I'd be a lot more comfortable buying a $2500 guitar than a $8000 guitar from a stranger over the internet, and would take a different approach for the latter.

+1

I don't accept Paypal as a seller either, and I don't do EMT as a buyer, unless I can see some seller feedback
Of course, there's no more feedback on here, so unless you've been around long and dealt a lot, you don't really know who you're dealing with
Thankfully I've got some good Reverb feedback now

Winnipeg is a small community when it comes to musicians. I'm sure someone knows who this guy is.
First, very sorry to hear this a news and thanks Bradley for sharing with us. Maybe you’ll get the chance to take this guy on a long ride through the trees in the cold months.

Second, if this guy never provided a guitar and just took the money, maybe he’s not even really in the music scene? Just a guy with enough of a passing knowledge to read a forum like me, but he sees the opportunity to scam…

Sorry to hear as I’ve been in your shoes recently. I was scammed as well for a Fender Telecaster Custom contoured body which was sanded down to the wood. The weight was perfect and I’ve been waiting months for it to arrive. I may as well “chalk it up to experience “. Yes it was a Kijiji ad that I inquired on and yes, I EMT’d the money. No more long distance Kijiji deals for me. So far, I have had zero problems dealing with my long distance Guitars Canada brothers and sisters but more and more of these Kijijiidiots are slipping through the cracks and that worries me a little. You can usually recognize them especially when they offer you half of what you have priced your instrument for (which in most cases is a very fair price) and they are local and will make these stupid offers without coming over to inspect and try out your instrument. All I can say is “BUYER BEWARE”. We have a good system here allowing members to comment on other members they have dealt with. Let’s look after one another and not ruin a good thing ...and always report if there is a “cancer” who has made our “fraternity “ his or her new “home”.
Good luck in finding that prick who ripped you off as you may still have a chance....as for me, well.... I learned my lesson.

Maybe you/we can also refer to a listing on a site with seller/buyers protection. I have no problem selling on Reverb with related fees if both are feeling more safe. Everyone need to take precaution, but everyone risq tolerance is different.

Most boards that have sale restrictions have a minimum of between 10 and 100 posts before they can post a FS ad. That's a decent deterrent, enough to keep most of the riff raff away.

I've used PayPal before for stereo/car/guitar parts, seems OK.

You've all been so great. I continue to build my file with our local RCMP. Forwarding photos, e-transfer screen shot, email address and phone numbers. Pretty much done what I can do. I am in a good spot for guitars. Enjoying my Boucher OM Bluegrass Hybrid and a 59 Strat Custom Shop through a Swart Space Tone Amp. Like many of you I have played them all. The fraud hurts but I take solace in the fact that you all have my back. Blessings, Bradley.

Here is the common MO:
Premium member posts WTB ad.
The thief responds to it offering either the item or refering to someone who has one for sale.
The thief is not premium member because that requres payment for membership.
Thats harder to do without leaving trace, than by just signing up for free account.
The thief’s account is usually new.
Thief is vague on details, or pics. Ask for picture with current newspaper, or with one of the strings removed and coiled ……or something…..Mars bar on top…….mmmmmmmmm Mars bar…….got to go get one.

I’m in Winnipeg. Is that his real name?
Well I have a drivers license with that name on it and a photograph of him holding the docs. Who knows if that is Dallas Pete Riley. Have forwarded all to local RCMP. Hopefully something will come of it. Thanks Chris.
Hey Bradley; I can only imagine how bad you feel. I had almost the exact same thing happen to me here on the GC Forum last week. Some dirt bag answered answered my WTB: Eastman E40 OM ad here. His asking price seemed a bit high & right away he dropped the price by $500.00 without me even asking...1st telltale sign...Then he would only accept etransfer. No PayPal. 2nd telltale sign... he even did the same as your guy. Sent me pics of his drivers license & some other ID card to show he wouldn't rip me off. Thanks Rudi. RCMP has all docs now. Fingers crossed that something good will happen. Karma on my side. Playing a nice Boucher OM Bluegrass Hybrid and my electric rig is a Custom Shop 59 Strat through a Swart Space Tone. I have a gig in Banff this aft. Will be rockin' away on Bear Street. Great to hear from you. Bradley Bischoff

I too have done so many deals on line over the years. Collings Forum, Ebay, Craigslist, Kijiji, CGF. NEVER and a bad deal. I am done. My trust is shot for the moment. Thanks for your kind words. Bradley

Awesome Bradley! I've got a Swart Space Tone as well. Talk about a "Swiss Army knife" of an amp, huh? Good luck with this situation. It really sucks...

Funny you mention that. I had an encounter with a would be scammer not too long ago through this site and he also sent pictures of a firearms license and drivers license.

This really truly sucks! So sorry to hear this. I have sold a lot of gear through this Board and bought a few items as well and all have been fantastic buyers and sellers. Quality folks through and through. There is always someone trying scam though, always which ruins things. This place is pretty much the best of the best for us North of the border.

I just hope you get some restitution for this.
