Sage Wisdom needed fellow GASers

So I currently own a wonderful Novo Signature TC as my 2HB guitar. It's plays great, sounds wonderful and looks lovely. I custom ordered it, waited for it and enjoy it. I could nit pick the relic job as I preferred other Novo guitars I've owned but all in all it's wonderful.

Today I rec'd a message from a gentleman on TGP who I sold a VOS 63 335 to back in 2021. I have previously instructed him to reach out to me if that guitar was ever up for sale again. As recently as the past few weeks I've even scanned the for sale archives there is see if it was ever moved. So I have the chance to re-acquire that guitar if I want to. The value on both instruments is the same, give or take a few dollars.

I think I know what to do here. I think I will lend myself the money to re-acquire the 335 and live with both instruments for a few weeks and then decide which I should keep.

My only hesitation is in the wisdom of being content. I have a guitar that fills this void, I'll only keep one, and do I really NEED to muddy the mental waters by bringing back the 335. Then again, if I don't and it disappears forever, will I spend my final lucid years thinking about the "one that got away".

Thoughts? Advice?

The 335 in question. The Novo is in my avatar.

As someone who’s been in your shoes a few times, buying it now and deciding later is a smart move. Get it back, spend some time with it and see if you think keeping it is the best option. As you point out, once it’s gone, it’s gone. This is your one opportunity.

As someone who's bought the same guitar twice - twice - I say make the trade. You can always get another Novo, and perhaps one that does it for you a bit better.

If you have the financial means to have both and then decide, that to me is the answer. If you dont, the 335 is the one getting your attention and that shouldnt be easily dismissed.

I have sold a couple of guitars that I regretted afterwards, and while I did make inquiries about getting one of them back I never actually pulled the trigger to reacquire it. (Two of them actually went to the same guy, go figure!!…)

All that said, I guess the only question you may want to ask yourself is, “what made me want to sell the 335 in the first place?” (e.g. the neck profile, opportunity to sell for a profit, lack of play time, or “it just seemed like a good idea at the time!”) I just think sometimes it’s not a bad idea to reflect on where your head was at before incurring shipping costs and risk.

Everyone is prone to having second thoughts about instruments they’ve let go of. If you truly have the desire and the financial ability to recoup “the one that got away”, having both guitars to compare will allow you to make an informed decision and remove any doubt as to which axe is best for you.

My 2 cents only, best of luck…nice ES-335, BTW!

I agree with this. If you have the means and you’re not sacrificing food or shelter, go for it. You only live once, why deny yourself.

I have learned from much spending that contentment cannot be purchased.

......but I think you need both 😅

Keep them both. You only live once. Here you are given a rare second chance.

Think of the 335 as an investment. It will most likely double in value in the near future.
Pretend the guy changed his mind when you contact him again, and now he doesn't wanna sell.
how do you feel about it? Indifference means don't bother, if you are a bit sore, grab it and shootout time :)

I sold it to make $5-700…it was early in COVID and I was flipping guitars like crazy. I can buy it back for what I sold it for and the same rough value of the Novo.

If you can get it for “early COVID” money, jump on it. It’s likely a stupid-good price in today’s market. An ES-335 is usually a dependable guitar market-wise and that one is an exceptional example. Even if you don’t plan on keeping it, you can make some good money if and when you decide to move it along.

OMG, why is this even a question?

I have a guitar that fills this void
No, no you don't. Only a 335 fills the void of not having a 335.

Go get it.

The correct answer is both guitars.

I think most of the wisdom has already been spoken in that thread.

I'd say having both at the same time is probably a bad idea contrary to what other suggested. There's no rational involved here, one guitar is not going to out spec the other these are both stellar guitars. You'll probably end up keeping both or having the same dilemma.

Being "content" is not about the gear, ask yourself why you're not content with what you already have today :)

Sometimes (often) we just want things. Nothing wrong with that.
