Very interesting. I worked in West Germany fromm 1977-1981 and in that time visited West and East Berlin. The difference was almost mind boggling. Crossed to East Berlin at checkpoint Charlie. West Berlin was like the rest of West Germany and western Europe. Modern cars, plenty of food (had my first Whooper in west Berlin), lots of consumer goods, restaurants, cafes. The east side was bare. Hardly any people on the street, no consumer goods, rwtaurants closed and was only able to find one cafe which server fake coffee. The cars!!! Other than military, there was only one. The two stroke Trabant. Didn't stay long in east Berlin.
