There's a few people here who own Prestige guitars. I own one and have gigged with it in one of the original bands I played in.
That's great news. The quality of their guitar are excellent. They used to have it built in Korea, then put everything here in Canada.

I’m looking forward to seeing what comes out of their custom shop. I haven’t owned one of their guitars, but have been eyeing them up for a while.
They've been around for some time now. I used to own the thinline hollowbody Musician model and the build quality was amazing. (It's been discontinued, probably because the body was almost too wide to sit comfortably. But it sounded great.)

My understanding (could be wrong!) is that they are manufactured in Korea and shipped to Canada where they are setup and shipped from. I think Reverend does the same thing.

Exactly how they do it.

I got a Prestige case in a trade last year, and aside from the branding it was pretty much a identical TKL case to the one used by Gibson. That’s a quality case and shows their attention to detail. I’ve never seen one, but have heard plenty of good things about the guitars.
It's an interesting business model and I used to enjoy dropping in on their Commercial shop in Vancouver (and then when they moved to North Van). They always had some interesting non-Prestige guitars in the store (I actually bought my Seagull S12 from them). Good for them for expanding into locally made stuff, wonder who the luthiers are?
I just checked out their website. Nothing there about custom shop stuff yet, but $1995 plus HST for a Korean made guitar is just ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I've owned a good number of fantastic guitars from Korea and other overseas manufacturers, but sorry that's ludicrous. If they're charging that much for an import, the custom shop models will be $4-5k. I guess there's a reason you don't hear much about them.

I assume you have not heard of Eastman guitars. These are guitars that are totally made in China. IMO, considering that the Prestige guitars are made using CNC machines which really doesn't differ much from having it done anywhere, and then Prestige installs all the hardware, setup and the QC in Vancouver, their $2k price is not out of the ordinary.

I guess I don't really get why that's "ridiculous"...

If you're talking about the LP-style Heritage Elite... it's got Grover tuners, Tusq nut, Seymour Duncan humbuckers, and TonePros bridge and tail. It's a set neck guitar, bound top, bound fretboard, bound headstock. Chances are the flame maple top started here, went there, and came back on a fully made guitar. And I think the installation of hardware and setup is done here. And it comes with a hard case.

All all that for less than the price of just the Murphy aging part of a Gibson CS LP...

You know what they say about assuming.

I've heard of Eastman. I wouldn't buy one for those prices. There are plenty of options for way cheaper that look and play just as nice.
Their custom shop guitars are in the $4500-$5500 range. Import built are ~$2K. I've never seen one, but that might be reasonable depending on the quality.
I won't be interested in these, new or used. If the pricing is set at what is posted in this thread I doubt they'll sell many or last long as a shop.

Is that a solid flamed top or a veneer on top of plain maple?

I actually like the Todd Kerns sig model, but it's the same price, and definitely no maple top there.

Grovers aren't that great IMO. Tusq nuts are like $10. The pickups and Tonepros hardware do make a difference, but still, $1995. I could buy a cheaper guitar and upgrade it and still have cash leftover.

Some of the Carparelli or Dot on Shaft guitars are similar-- I'm pretty sure their LP style guitars share the same template. They pop up used from time to time at very reasonable prices.

Unfortunately, at 2023 prices, this isn't off-base.

They are full thickness flame tops. My understanding is that the wood is sourced in Canada and sent to Korea to be built.

2k for solid woods and hardware isn’t a bad price to me. Especially when larger brands ie ESP use veneers on their made in Japan guitars until you get into their custom shop builds.

The point I was making is that they recognized brand parts... whether you you like 'em or not is a different matter.

I suppose what I never really understand is... what should make a guitar made in South Korea any less expensive than one made in, say, Canada or the US?

Oh I see your point and completely agree that if like = like then the price should equate that. BUT, it doesn't. It's a simple matter of labour costs.

However, having said that, check out Godin's website. Lot's of guitars here for much more reasonable prices, and all Made In Canada. It's too bad they don't have a proper Les Paul style guitar to compare.
It may be worth it from a labour material standpoint, but I would question whether they have a good resale value.
