I posted last week about a clearout sale at Tom Lee. I ordered one of these. They sent me an email to say it was a demo unit but was in as new shape and did I still want it. I dithered a bit then decided to go for it. I plan to basically gut the guitar and build it into a gigging guitar so I wasn’t worried about a few minor scratches. I needn’t have worried. I can’t find a scratch on it. It is the best setup Gibson I’ve purchased new in several years. It had new strings and obviously had been tweaked at Tom Lee. Even the fret ends had been touched up. My only complaint is the nut needs a small tweak. The G string is a little sharp if you fret the first couple frets hard. It is a very nice weight relieved Les Paul, great sustain, and classic Les Paul tone. My plan was to gut it but it plays and sounds so nice I’m not in a hurry. I have a set of Sigil pickups to go into it and I’m going to rewire it 50’s style. Eventually I may install some locking tuners and a different bridge. The 2017 models have a glossy top with the faded finish on the sides and back. It looks way better than in my cell phone pictures.

Very similar to my 2016 LP Studio Faded Cherry.

Edit: we obviously share similar tone preferences as i recall you also recently picked up a Pro jr!
I was going to try it with the Pro Junior at last night's jam but ended up playing my Larrivee 12 string all night. Next week it'll be the Les Paul with the Pro Junior for sure.

Really torn with this guitar. I bought it to mod it. I work graveyards Saturday and Sunday and planned to spend Monday afternoon swapping out the pickups for a Sigil set I’ve had sitting for a while. Got up just after noon, had coffee and breakfast, then went downstairs to work on the guitar. I’ll just plug it in and give it quick play so I have the tone in my head and can compare it to the new pickups I thought. Bad move! Two hours later I’m still playing it. I really like the 490s in this guitar. The Sigils are going to have to wait for another guitar.

I find I play more in the summer and mod more in the winter. So much more to do in the summer - and we usually gig more in the summer, too. But those long rainy stretches we get are just the ticket for putting on the visor and heating up the irons. I usually have a number of projects save up for Nov / Dec. Maybe that's the time to give those sigils a try?

I found an Epiphone Dot for a reasonable price on the local Craig’s List. The Sigil pickups are installed in the Dot and it sings. I really like the look of the black Sigil pickups over the stock chrome covered ones. I love the tone. The stock pickups were quite muddy. Looks like the Dot will be my modding platform and the Les Paul will stay stock.

For my taste, the only thing needed is a set of black top hat dials

(I also removed the 'E' off of my Casino Coupe)

I like the look of black tophats. They were stock on my ES335.

But I prefer chrome pickups over black open-coils, so we may just have different preferences. I replaced black pups with chrome on my Vantage VE450 (2nd pic, I also replaced the speed knobs with black tophats after this pic was taken).

That said, I also prefer the look of the Gibson pickguard - the Epi one always looked a bit off to me.
