New BANJO Day!

It’s a Cort tenor banjo. Scored it on Kijiji. I just set it up in Chicago tuning (DGBE). The D’Addario EJ21 string set works for this, though I’ll probably accumulate extra 6th & 5th strings with no place to use them. No one seems to make a set of tenor banjo strings that are optimized for Chicago tuning.

Thanks, but those are for CGDA tuning. DGBE needs a stouter 1st string.

I know what you mean. I often have to make special sets for short scale (usually referred to as Irish tenor, GDAE) banjo as the stock sets are too light in my opinion.

Have you tried that banjo as an open back? I often take the backs off my banjos.

Try using the heaviest gauge 5 string set you can find. That'll leave you with some spare 5th strings which are usually the same gauge as the 1st. 5 string sets are set up to be tuned gDGBD (or similar) The first string, especially on your short scale tenor, will easily tune up to E putting you in Chicago tuning.
