Hi All,

I took a new job in the greater Ottawa area and I'm packing up the family and heading up soon.

What are the best guitar shops, and what should I check out in terms of the music scene?

Quite a few shops, everyone has their favourite, a couple of Long&McQuade, Spaceman, Fleet Sound, Lauzon, Class Axe (Kemptville) a few others

Shops mostly covered in the above - Steve's and St John's also. The music scene depends on what kind/genre you are interested in. Here's a couple of links mostly related to jazz that will get you started. Welcome to Ottawa. Nice place to live and lots to see and do especially with all the festivals on during the summer.

Spaceman Music is the largest used and new instrument store in Ottawa. Situated on Gladstone ave.

Pretty much all covered above, with the exception of Metro Music in the Glebe, and Distoshop in Gatineau; both small shops but decent places.. The only thing I would add is that if you're going to be in the vicinity on May 28, you may want to check out this show: Guitar Show & Musicians Market | guitars | Ottawa | Kijiji The organizer of the show used to operate Retrotown music, which was a slightly larger dealer of used/vintage stuff than Spaceman. He still deals in the same gear, but decided to go virtual when the bricks-and-mortar store property was expropriated for a huge condo. Part of his virtual venture is organizing the show. That show has most of the locals, and some non-locals, in attendance.

We've actually lost a few gear places in recent years. Not only Retrotown, but also International Musicland, Simply Guitars, and Dominic's. Class Axe is decent, but is also a half-hour drive out of town.

Spaceman Music used to be the Ottawa branch of the former Songbird on Queen St., before Songbird folded and the Ottawa staff bought the store. They don't have as much stuff as you'd expect from a metropolitan area many times the size of the National Capitol Region, but there's more than enough to browse at, and the staff are always pleasant.

We stay at the BEST WESTERN PLUS OTTAWA DOWNTOWN SUITES which is about 2 blocks from from Spaceman. We have stayed there about a dozen times and found the location easy to get around from, close to some decent restaurants and a nice, clean hotel.
Warning: The underground parking is tight.

Lauzon has a lot of high end gear and some pedal makes that no one else carries. I got a Malekko pedal there over Christmas.

I'm moving up on Sunday the 23rd but my wife and kids won't be moving up until July, so I'd be interested in guitar related beer if a gathering happens...
