Posted this on HCBF as well for those who frequent both places....

I came across this at one of the stores here in T.O. Anyone have info/experience with these?

I've seen MIM PBass Specials with standard P/J pups, but not with noiseless J pickup, nor a 3 band active EQ (like the American Jazz Deluxe).

Was this a production model (they say its a 2005)? Price is right at $450 CDN.

Here's the description from the site...

MANUFACTURER: Fender
DESCRIPTION: Made in Mexico, in excellent condition. Versatile Fender Hybrid Bass... P-Bass body style and bridge, 20 fret Jazz Bass neck. Solid black finish, Gold pickgaurd, side output jack. Alnico split coil P-Bass pickups, Ceramic Noisless Jazz Bass Pickup. Master Volume, Blend knob, Bass/Treble Boost or Cut +/-18db, Mid Boost/Cut +/- 18db's. Comes with original plastic electronics 'guide'. A big 'phat' sounding versatile bass. Comes with GigBag.

oh, I'm seriously thinking about it - I've never seen a MIM with the active EQ - will definitely being going downtown to at least plug it in and play it - will be bringing my Yamaha to A/B it. As long as it plays to my less-than-'fine-touch' standards (I play hard, so low action is not of great concern to me), and sounds as good as or better than the Yamaha, it's going to be hard to pass up.

No word on the newest SX yet? I thought about enquiring about the one you just sold.

P.S. - Lug hasn't commented yet, but a couple positive and 1 negative review so far. That's the thing with Fender's and Fender style basses - you either like them, or hate them - not a lot of middle ground.

I took a few hours out this afternoon and went to a couple of stores - one in NewMarket that I've never been to and my regular one. The Newmarket store had one of these new so I tried it out - played really well, and sounded good. They also had a used Highway 1 'P' for around the same price - it played just as well, but didn't sound anywhere near as good in my opinion.

So, off to my regular store I went and talked with the guitar manager who is big into bass - we chatted for about 1/2 hour. I think I'm going to sell off one of my RBX's and some of my old 80's Rockman gear and order one of these.

Also, they've got a GBE600 for $650CDN and a GB 1x15". Going to play through it next time there - may put the Ashdown on the block if it sounds 1/2 as good as the reputation it has.

Well, it did - :food-smiley-004:

I just scored this on the bay, from Manitoba, no less, so no customs/duty fees....

This appears to be a MIM PBass Special body, with the stock neck replaced with an MIA one. I would have ordered blue (if I was going to get a new one), but the red is really nice as well. First order of business will be to replace the cheesy gold pickguard with a white pearloid. Hopefully will have it for rehearsal next Friday.

One of my RBX's (black one) will be going on the block next....

I agree - I have a MIM strat as well - only thing I upgraded on it was a DiMarzio Fast Track2 in the bridge position - it plays really nice. I may consider a different nut (graduated like on MusicMan Axis', or the Buzz Feitin (sp?) mod) to really nail the intonation.

I've not tried putting a BAII or a Gotoh bridge on any of my basses (yet). From what I've read, they increase the sustain, as well as 'brighten' up the sound a bit.

The funny thing about this bass is that while it's called MIM, the bridge is 'upgraded' to an american bridge - not sure what the difference is - it's still a bent piece of metal .
