Im pretty amateur when it comes to recording so routing is pretty new to me.

I got a akai mpk mini controller for christmas, and honestly could never get the thing running properly with the factory included software. That aside, I use Reaper and have found some pretty powerful sounds that I'd like to be able to use. The couple times I got them working to my liking it took hours of screwing around and was never really able to repeat the settings in a quick manor. By the time I get it working I'd lose the creative juice and moved on.

Are there any hard and fast ways to route the output sound into a track to record what I'm playing 'live', but to also be able to record, and maybe edit the piano roll after the fact to take ideas or jams and structure it into a song as it evolves?

How do you guys route your controllers in Reaper to be most effective?
