Update here: I LOVE my Diezel VH4 pedal. It's a big pedal, but it also sounds huge, and it's one of the thightest distortion pedal I've heard. The notes are immediate and crisp.
It is also very good as a preamp using your amp's power amp, if you have an effect loop. I love it with my Mesa Roadster.
I use an Ibanez Super Metal Mini a lot with one of the bands I play in. Small footprint with a big sound. I find it leaves the inherent response and decay of your amp alone and builds off the pre-existing tone, although, it does take quite a while to get 'just right'.
