I go to NYC every year to visit my sister and nephew. This year we had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square and I saw this on the way out.
They also had a John Entwhistle bass that I unfortunatly did not get a picture of.

I'm a great admirer of both so I was happy to see these on display.

Not the Mac's bass

sorry to shatter your illusion man
Paul's bass also has staple pickups not blackline pickups
The left handed Hofner beatle bass I bought in 1965 has staple pickups.
The cases are crap, but you can get some great tones out of the bass.
If you ever have the opportunity to pick one up Id say do it.
They weight about 2 pounds if that.
If someone can tell me how to post pictures here I'll send some along

Photos we need photos eh!

I am 60 years old so many of my illusions have been shattered already ... not that big a deal. Thanks for the info. I just remembered that I have a book called Beatles Gear by Andy Babiuk and it shows Paul's bass very clearly. Thanks for reminding me I had this book it was a great read this morning.

Ampeg amps

What do you think of Ampeg amps.

I see you have quite the herd or them

Ive always been a Traynor guy, although I did own a Vox Essex Bass amp for a bit back in 65 when I first started playing. A real Paul I was, or at least I thought. Vox amp and lefty beatle bass.

I switched to Traynor in 67 as it was easier to come by in Toronto during the 60's and I found it hard to beat that great warm tube sound that the custom specials push out, and they were a great deal cheaper at that time, being a starving student and musician.

yes as someone pointed out...it's right handed.
and it has blade pickups rather than staple pickups.

hard rock should really do more research before they display stuff like this

maybe what they meant was that this is the "paul mccartney" model hofner bass. in that sense, it's correct. i have no idea why hofner decided to use blades on a "paul mccartney" model...it's very confusing because neither of paul mccartney's hofners looked like it.

(pre) Sir Paul

I recall an old interview with Paul, where he said he purchased a Hofner because of the symmetrical shaped body. He could restring it backwards and play left handed.

He said he wasn't "sure the music thing would work out", so he didn't want to pay the premium price for a real lefty bass.

He also said Hofners were much cheaper than US basses because they were made in Germany, where the band was working.

Q. Who's the richest woman in the UK?
A. Whoever's currently divorcing Sir Paul.

Hi calusses
sorry for the late reply, I just revisited this thread.
I have been so busy lately doing all the stuff outside that I should have done in the nicer weather...but you know it was too hot and lots of suds to drink..LOL
I just briefly tried it out with my little 40w ss traynor bass amp and am very impressed with the sound (considering that the little ss bass could use a new / larger speaker) first time trying flatwounds.
I, hopefully, will haul my traynor tube amp up to the house (from my shop/jam hall) this weekend and that i think is the amp best suited to the Icon.
cheers
