Pardon me Dave but I think I'd sub in the word EVIL for asshole. The bad in the world isn't happenstance, it's what happens when our pride makes anyone feel like they are the final say on moral and descent conduct.
High self estimation. AKA arrogance. No one would do these crimes without the self assurance that they "deserve" to do so regardless of their error of thought.
