I was using Spybot on my old laptop but I am wondering if there is something better out there.

I don't want something ultra intrusive that is constantly interrupting other program, blocking simply operations etc.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated,

I was recommended to use Spybot a few years ago by the folks in I.T. here at work, whose principal focus seems to be data security more than anything else. Whether it has been superceded by something better since then, I couldn't tell you. But it can be set to not stick its nose in constantly if that's what's bugging you.

I was also recommended to use something from Kaspersky Labs called TDSKiller ( https://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/tdsskiller ). It is compact, free, runs quickly and only upon request. It won't catch and clean everything, but seems to be a useful part of a computer-hygiene regimen.

I've had good luck with MalwareBytes Premium. I use it with Windows Defender and so far so good. Mind you, I'm not searching for porn like some of you guys.

Malwarebytes does catch and block more stuff than Windows Defender.

Is it just me, or do some of you occasionally have a queasy feeling about "free" downloads for software promising to do this or that, whether it be anti-malware, other types of security, or even driver updates?

I don't have anything running on my laptop/desktop computers but I use AdwCleaner at least once a month or even more if I notice it slowing down. This was recommended to me by someone who does this thing for a living. I"ve been using it for the last 2 years now and it cleans out issues very well. It doesn't install anything other than the program and it's very easy to run. I have used it on my parent's computers and also friend's computers. Always works great. Check it out.
