Looking for a Champ DIY amp kit

1704 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Tarbender
Does anyone know of any Canadian suppliers or amp makers that sell Champ type kits? I found some really nice 18 watt kits but thats just too much power for my needs. 5 watts or less would be ideal. I know that there are a lot of U.S. dealers and some in S.E. Asia, but I really like to keep my money in this country and support some domestic amp makers.

Consider doing the Tweed Princeton, it has the tone control and a 10" speaker and it's about 5 watts.

A Weber kit might be a good place to start.
Thanks for the idea Jeff. I've been looking at Weber's stuff as well as some other U.S. suppliers, but before I go that route, I'd like to see if there are any Canadian companies doing the same thing. I think the Trinity kits are awsome, but just way too much power for my needs. But I was hoping that there might be some other Canadian companies that I don't know about .
Good suggestion Paul. I went to Trinity's web site but there is no price quoted for the KIT. I also checked out Trinitys' forum and saw the pics/comments from the 1st build - very nice!
I try to support Canadian companies, but I had zero luck finding a Canadian company that offered either of the kits I wanted. Which were either a simple dual EL84 combo, or a Champ. Weber offers both for great prices.

I personally ended up going with L'il Dawg for both my Tweed amps since he builds them cheaper then I can get a kit for. Again, an American company but one offering services that I couldn't find in Canada. Plus I have never had better customer support in my life. Jim who owns the company goes so far above and beyond for you that it's beyond belief. So I don't feel bad about not going Canadian in this case.
Champ kit amp

Tarbender: are you looking for a kit so you can build it yourself, or is the final product what you're after? I built the tweed Champ kit from Marsh. Although it came with a new Weber sig 8S speaker, I put an even better Weber speaker in it plus I added the power supply choke to conform to 5E1 circuitry (the kit was 5F1).

It's a beauty of an amp to look at and to play through. It's not getting much play time compared to my Super Reverb. It's available for sale, drop me an email. Anyone can email me about it, actually.

If you wish to build the amp, I found Marsh was a couple of dollars cheaper than Weber and others. They offer free tech support if you need it.
Thanks Gunny - PM sent...
