ok folks
like the title says....what this thing on the head-stock?
If you cant name it, can you tell what it does?

AKA ...a mute

You can do the same with a band of fabric (or similar) around the first fret.
Some jazz players use them to mute the (open) strings in chords that should be muted by technique.

Many guitars did the damping by the bridge. I recently sold off a Kawai guitar with a foam mute you could flip up to touch the underside of the strings by the bridge. If memory serves I think the HOfner "Beatle" bass offered this as an option. Here's one installed on a P-bass

And here's one installed on a Teisco.
