John Mellencamp Song Highlights Disastrous Portland

As I saw through the eyes of Portland one day
There were so many homeless, they'd all gone astray
They slept on the corners during the day
As not to be harmed when the sun went away

There were old ones and young ones, white ones and black
They were all shapes and sizes, with rags on their backs
So many people mixed up in this stew
With no place to go and nothing to do

All of these homeless, where do they come from?
In this land of plenty where nothing gets done
To help those who are empty and unable to run
Your tears and prayers won't help the homeless

Some are mentally ill, some are higher than kites
Selling their bodies as day turns to night
Where are their loved ones, does anyone care?
To be lost and alone in the middle of nowhere

All of these homeless, where do they come from?
In this land of plenty where nothing gets done
To help those who are empty and unable to run
Your tears and prayers won't help the homeless

What will it take for this country to see
For the grace of God go they and not you and me
The fallen and forgotten, who are down on their knees
Living here in the gutters in this land of the free

All of these homeless, where do they come from?
In this land of plenty where nothing gets done
To help those who are empty and unable to run
Your tears and prayers won't help the homeless
Your tears and prayers won't help the homeless

I’ve recently been to Washington, Baltimore and Denver and they all have homeless people pretty much everywhere in the downtown. Several small parks in DC are tent cities, one pretty close to the Whitehouse. The Capital’s arena is pretty much surrounded 24/7 by homeless people. I was surprised at the numbers in Denver but they were there too. It’s not a Portland only problem, it seems all US cities have a homeless problem.

Canada has it's fair share too.

agreed… but DC is another level.. Pictures of the homeless ‘district’ in Phoenix are unreal… you think it’s a movie set about the apocalypse but it’s not. 4000+ homeless in tents in a few blocks. I don’t know the cause or solution… it’s very confusing to see a country with 10 million plus millionaires living in 10 million dollar homes and see these tent cities everywhere.

Unfortunately, that's political and we can't comment on that.

Been a big fan of John's since Lonesome Jubilee.
I prefer him to Springsteen for the Americana story songs. This is well crafted too.
Thanks for posting @laristotle

Oh, so I clicked the link and found out why the link reads as such, Mods, please nuke this before the inevitable.

Although leaving the restrictions in this coterie of levisites aside for a moment it seems that even in the real world facts no longer matter and it doesn’t matter that facts no longer matter. The welfare state ain’t all it was cracked up to be.

I've watched it get worse in Ottawa over the last 5 years or so. Don't worry, it's coming here too.

Yep. When it's getting to the point where people with good jobs can't afford housing where they work, it's getting bad. The homeless numbers will only increase.

I can't even imagine what it would be like working retail and trying to live in Toronto.

It doesn't help that we've also incorporated social initiatives that make homelessness more inviting. That being said, Ottawa is in desperate need of a municipal divorce that will likely never come.
I won't get into the social and political elements, but the song is pretty blah for me. No hook, nothing that sticks on my head.,
