Sorry don't have no experience but I'm in a similar situation and can only offer words of encouragement. I'm sure there are expert member to help out here.
I didn;t want to say it but a cleat under the crack is the easy part, one would think fixing it would also include the hard part of filling the crack, no?
Drop fill with lacquer, probably tinted to some degree is usually best, but pics will tell us everything.
I've seen a combination of fine sawdust and glue mix put in the crack, a light sanding and then lacquer on top do an almost invisible fix. Here is a video that may be helpful.
