I immediately thought of that appearance. I think he also played at the wedding of Tony Roletti, that was officiated by Rabbi Abraham "Shecky" Stein. Man those were weird gigs.
I first saw Waits in '73 or '74 or so, when he opened for Frank Zappa at an outdoor show at Terre des Hommes in Montreal. He was solo on piano. I have a vague recollection that the MC introduced him as something a little different. I don't recall all of his set but I remember he did this tune. I hadn't heard of him before, but I kind of liked him, based on that set.:
I have a Hal Willner compilation album called "Stay Awake", that has various musicians re-interpreting songs from Disney movies. Tom Waits does "Heigh Ho (it's off to work we go)" from Snow White and the 7 Dwarves. It is seriously dark.
Over the last few years Bone Machine has become my go to Waits album. The slightly revamped live versions of Goin' Out West, Such a Scream and Dirt in the Ground are some of my faves from Glitter and Doom too.
