I immediately thought of that appearance. I think he also played at the wedding of Tony Roletti, that was officiated by Rabbi Abraham "Shecky" Stein. Man those were weird gigs.

I first saw Waits in '73 or '74 or so, when he opened for Frank Zappa at an outdoor show at Terre des Hommes in Montreal. He was solo on piano. I have a vague recollection that the MC introduced him as something a little different. I don't recall all of his set but I remember he did this tune. I hadn't heard of him before, but I kind of liked him, based on that set.:

I saw Tom at Massey Hall in the 80’s on the Frank’s Wild Years tour, followed by late night cocktails with friends accross the street at the Brown Derby. A perfect night.



I’m reading his biography at the moment.
