They've reissued the Starfire bass a few times (at least once just the single pup model). I remember the price being insane (higher than this one) on the last reissue but the build quality was great. I also wonder if the pickups are anything close to the original Bisonics - I mean if Hammon Engineering was able to repro them(Darkstar) then I don't see why Guild can't (to be fair Darkstars did cost like, what, US$300 each... but that was for a one man cottage industry produced boutique item, hand made from scratch to order vs proper mass production; I really should have grabbed one of those when he was still developing them and selling cheap on an old now-defunked bass board).

Body top, sides and back are all laminated mahogany. Here's another colour...

Laminate on this is fine - it's not deep (voluminous) enough to be really useful acoustically anyway. Won't make a diff for electric tone. In any case there's cheap ply and good ply; there are some really nice laminate top acoustics (as well as really horrible ones). The materials technology has gotten a lot better. Solid tops just increase cost disproportionately to the effect on electric tone.

... also I never noticed that 5th knob below the neck pup - what's that?
