Looking for your thoughts on Gibson’s Es235’s. I have one I’m looking at buying new in Vintage Sunburst. But I’d really like to hear for you guys if you think it’s worth buying for $2300.

Looks like the Es I’d like to buy for my style of playing (rock mostly)

Anyone out there have one, or think buying one is a good idea/investment???
Thanks for the advice ahead of time!
Cheers

Not a good "investment" but it might be a good guitar. Anything from Gibson that's hollow and does not have the number 335 in the name will have a limited market and be potentially difficult to sell should you choose to do so down the road. Seems to me these are routinely available used for big discounts off the new price. I love Busrstbucker Pro pickups, but lots of people don't - your ears will tell you which one you are.

That's a nice looking guitar that I'd probably enjoy owning, but I'd have to get it at a seriously good price.

I have the ES235 Limited Edition 34' burst. I've been using it for my duo and will be using it when we start playing with a full band. It's very comfortable to play. I just saw a black one for sale for $1900 a couple of weeks ago in FB Marketplace. Went very fast. Looking at Reverb.com though, seems like the price has gone up.

I tried the sunburst Godin Premier that looks similar to that. Loved it, but didn't buy. Now they have discontinued it, so I paid full price for the next one that I found. It has humbuckers that sound very "open" and "comfortable", not the head-crushing type. What a wonderful instrument for certain styles.

It was almost as expensive as the Gibson that you are looking at, so here's my two cents...

If you tried the Gibson and it suits you -- buy immediately. If you gotta worry about money, then you can't afford it.

Thanks for the great feed back guys!

By “investment” I mean worth the full price, I’m not looking to make money on buying for $2300.
Just don’t want to buy it if it’s not worth it from your opinion. And I haven’t seen any yet come up for less than the full price (give or take a few hundred dollars)

Guitars generally arent good investments. If you want to invest and see returns, talk to a financial advisor.

Now that I've said that - have you tried the guitar? Did you really like the one you played? If so, buy it.
Thanks. I haven’t tried it out yet, the shore is bringing it in from another store. But I’m able to try it before I pull the trigger :) And I’m glad I have time to hear what you guys have to say before I see it in person.
thanks again

I played an early one in store through an acoustic amp with a little verb. I adored the p/u s and if I'd had the money it would be in my basement. I saw it as a "175 I could maybe afford one day" but tonally it's not really in that ballpark.
Awesome thanks for your insight. I always considered it more in the ES135 ballpark no?

I think these guitars are awesome. I like that the neck is almost big enough for adult male hands and I really like the way they look and sound.

This is not an investment piece. Investment pieces are 60-70 years old and cost 47 x $2399.

I would pay $1500 for this guitar and I think that’s largely what someone could expect to redeem from it if you were to sell it.

I have never seen a Gibson on a wall at any music store (including their showcase models at Gibson showcases and high end custom shop models)that didn’t have fret issues. Meaning that if you look down either side of the fret board from top to bottom, you’ll likely see uneven frets or a noticeable slope leading up the neck tenon. This can be fixed by a professional. Might simply be a fret level and relief adjustment. Might require more invasive repairs like a board planing or neck reset. I’d want L&M to deal with the last two of that’s the case. And you can bet your ass that if they are selling them at a discount, it’s because it is B stock or has issues like the ones I just mentioned.

If I were buying new, I would insist that they include a free PLEK. If I were buying used, I would factor the cost of a PLEK and probably better pickups down the road.

I think that it is a good idea to buy this guitar.

Good luck with finding one for that. I thought the $1900 I saw a couple of weeks ago was a good deal and it was gone rather quickly. Specially now that the prices in Reverb.com are hovering close to $3k.

L & M has a black ES-235 still on sale for $1900 if anyone’s also looking. But I’m a real sucker for the Vintage Sunburst…

I tried an ES-235 out earlier this summer with the intention of buying it if I liked it.
Overall I thought it was a very nice guitar but the neck wasn't quite the right fit for me so I passed on it.
I ended up buying a Godin Montreal Premiere instead which is a similar type of guitar. If you can find one it is well worth comparing it to the ES-235 as an option.
