One of the landmark experiences of my life was taking George Gruhn to lunch and getting to see the "upstairs" area of the store where the select customers got to go.

As the video demonstrates, George's sense of humour is dry enough to dehydrate vegetables and make beef jerky with. Missing are all the animals he keeps in the office, like "Boyd" (Boid?) the African Grey parrot, and assorted iguanas and things. In 2009, at least, he and his wife had a pair of civets at home. I have no idea how long those animals live so they may well be gone by now. George has a graduate degree in animal behaviour.

When he wrote for Guitar Player Magazine he became a huge influence on guitar nerds. Not just a living legend but a walking talking encyclopedia.

A lot of folks aren't aware of it, but the old Johnny Cash Show was recorded in the Ryman Auditorium. If you look at this Streetview pic, you'll see the former site of Gruhn's on your left and the back of the Ryman on your right. The structure on the right was built recently, and takes up what would have been half the old parking lot of the Ryman. At the time, it was a 100yd trot - if not less - from the artists' entrance at the back of the Ryman to Gruhn's. So you can only begin to imagine the kinds of people and instruments that made the journey across the parking lot.

Old guys story alert......In the late 70's I took a month to travel from Edmonton to Ontario via the states. I ended up in Nashville and quickly discovered the music store around the corner from Ryman's. Be damned if a D28 S for $500 caught my eye. I went out to the truck and counted out my money and I had just enough to get home if I bought it .... of course I did. They said it was a cast off of Norman Blakes,,but wouldn't document it. It wasn't until I got home did I discover it's fame and George's articles in Guitar Player.

Sadly that is the ONLY guitar I have sold ,,but the top was split along side the fretboard

Good to know. And before that, in the early '70s, Greuhn was partners with Tut Taylor in a tiny shop called GTR, about one block east of the Ryman. I bought an LG-O there from him that I had through college and beyond. The "GTR" sign from that shop still sits in the entrance of his current one.
