I picked up an Eventide H9 yesterday and quite impressed with the unit. I bought one 4 years ago and recall liking the sounds and Bluetooth technology but the Bluetooth and Editor (with an IOS device) is a notch above and super user friendly. You can make changes on the fly with your iphone and can completely control the unit from your device when playing. The manual recommends turning off the Bluetooth setting when playing live due to other phones being in the viscinity and the risk of someone being a little too clever. Downloading updates is all done via the phone and no need to plug in a USB type cable into a computer. The upgrade software did take over 12 minutes to download but ok with me avoiding any cabling.

The sounds are great - You can go pretty crazy with some of the algorithms but i tend to prefer "meat and potatoes" type effects such as chorus, phaser, rotary, flanger etc. The presets are very good but with the usual wet signal and output way up but with a couple clicks on the iPhone, changes are made and saved. Re-arranging the order of the presets is super easy as well. The beauty of the H9 is that it only has one knob, 2 switches and 4 mini switches (that i don't use because of the Editor app). It's as simple as it gets for a unit with a lot of features.

I did a few demo's. The first one i simply cycled through 9 presets via the footswitch while playing to show how easy it is (chorus, rotary, flanger, phaser, univibe, etc).

2 presets that i thought were quite cool:

a) the Funk Guitar is an EQ/Compression preset that compresses the sh*t of the signal but sounds glorious. I must have played an hour on that preset alone. I did the demo with my Knaggs which has two humbuckers and it pulls it off convincingly to my ears (note that it was recorded with my Iphone).

b) Metal - I don't see myself using this a lot but what blew me away is that there is no hiss. It's somewhat freaky as it seems like the amp is on a clean channel with no noise and suddenly this massive sound comes out of the speaker. I went a little balls to the wall on the demo and lost my footing but i stopped a few times to show the no hiss factor.

I keep seeing them in the pedalboard group, and I was chatting with Scott from Cancer Bats and he uses one as well.

I feel like one needs a midi controller to really get the functionality hidden in there.

ya, a controller would increase the possibilities and Eventide may sell one (not sure) - I use modulation sparingly and have a separate delay unit so I'm good with it as is.

Remember I offered you mine for a try out first time we met. Great unit, pricy though especially with the full set of algorithms.
If you ever want to try out two at the same time - let me know, you can always borrow mine.

Thx for the offer. I had owned one a few years back and was familiar with it. For some reason GAS took over me this week and decided to give in...

I had one and liked it but was turned off by the floor noise. I don't play live so my OCD kicks into overdrive (no pun intended) when I hear all the hiss and hum at bedroom levels. Not sure if this was ever improved on with firmware changes.
