Europe and cellphones...

I may be going to Europe soon, and have not been there since the advent of smartphones. What do I need to know. Basically want access to internet, maps, email and hopefully texting (not so much phoning). Do not want huge bills when I get home. Currently have iPhone (locked) with Telus.
Save whatever maps you may use to be available in Offline mode and you'll have access to them. If you download google hangouts you'll be able to place calls over wifi for free - I'm not sure if iMessage has that option to non-iphone numbers. You could also use Skype. So long as you can get decent wifi (fast food/hotel/s-bucks etc) you should be able to do what you need. I never have my phone out of airplane mode in the US but the wifi calling feature of my phone lets me text and call as usual. I just have to be in a wifi area.
