I may be going to Europe soon, and have not been there since the advent of smartphones. What do I need to know. Basically want access to internet, maps, email and hopefully texting (not so much phoning). Do not want huge bills when I get home. Currently have iPhone (locked) with Telus.

I just used free wifi when I went. You can even get a free phone number that works over wifi from the Textnow app, which lets you send/receive texts as well as voice calls when connected .
Otherwise, check what plans Telus offers. But they won’t be cheap,

Save whatever maps you may use to be available in Offline mode and you'll have access to them. If you download google hangouts you'll be able to place calls over wifi for free - I'm not sure if iMessage has that option to non-iphone numbers. You could also use Skype. So long as you can get decent wifi (fast food/hotel/s-bucks etc) you should be able to do what you need. I never have my phone out of airplane mode in the US but the wifi calling feature of my phone lets me text and call as usual. I just have to be in a wifi area.

Take an old unlocked phone with you and buy a pay as you go SIM card when you are there.
Ya, you just have to make sure it’s a phone that compatible with euro networks...iPhones should be fine, but not sure about all others.
