I bought one of these years ago and my compressor search ended. Mine came used for a couple of bucks because the tube was spent/faulty and I thought it would be a good project. So it turned out that Effectrode offered warranty but shipping was ridiculous so for 10 bucks I got the spec'd tube from Tubedepot and after 15 min the compressor was as good as new. Now I am starting to hear some of that soft crackling on note decay and beginning to think it's time for a new tube, ..again. For those of you with one of these units, have you had to deal with replacing the tube, how often? Is it weird to have it go after 4-5 years?

That uses the 6111 tube I believe. Life rating is 10000 hours, but it certainly wouldn't be the first time a tube started to fail prematurely.
You have to solder that tube in place so it's a bit of a chore, but not too difficult.
I believe the Tubestore has them in stock.

You know about this stuff, Dan. Do such minitubes generate enough heat that they could dry out and compromise electros?

wasn’t tough to replace but I doubt I had it on for 5-6 hours a day for the last 5 years. I think the Effectrode manual promises 25000 hours,., haven’t been this disappointed since the microwave lied about getting my hotpocket to delicious temperatures

It depends on the layout of the circuit board. Any caps would have to be pretty close to the tube, but being in a tight enclosure, it is possible.

I think 25000 hours is pushing it, but it should have done better than what you got. That said, 1000's of those tubes were made, and you can bet not all of them meet spec. Since there is no way to test these things, there may be a lot of them out there that are sub-standard. I also think that when it comes to NOS tubes, the supply of good ones is diminishing.
It is also possible that it is something else that is the issue. Changing the tube may be the only way to find out though.

makes sense on the NOS and things not meeting standards. I recognize the symptoms, will gave to swap the tube again. and buy a couple of spares this time.

Did you take your pants off? Your balls may have acted as insulation.
