Ear pearcing squeal when strumming?

I have a Cort Strat type guitar, and when I strum, i'm getting a high pitched, ear piercing type squeal coming out of it. Just wondering if anyone's run into this problem before, and what can I do to cure it?

Ground problem?
Bad pick ups?

Yes it does it in each in each guitar channel. Cables and connections have been checked.
Palm mute the strings and it's gone.

if it is a tremolo guitar, take the cover off of the back of the guitar and put your hand against the tremolo springs as you play.

Hummmmmmm???

Is it really a hum or a squeal? Does it happen when you pick individual notes?
A hum implies a bad ground.
Does it go away when you rest your hand on the bridge?
It shouldn't be too difficult to track down.
