I have both, selling (possibly already sold) the original. The plus is a little more convenient to use (a couple of more direct buttons), has multiple songs and 2 more parts per songs, and there is of course the looper. Otherwise, they are basically identical with the latest firmware release for the original version.

Related to your bass line question/comments, note specifically the addition of "Simple Bass" and "more often in lower register" notes in the firmware update.

The integrated looper was the selling point for me. The original is still a nice pedal, but looping a layer of guitar was a PITA.
The Sequence feature is also great feature to build a song. Totally worth the extra $$$.

I like the addition of the extra styles. Each style has its own two effects. Also each part has an alternate arrangement (when red) which is really cool.

Certain instances I even get the feeling that it's listening to my playing even when not in learn mode. Almost creepy. It's the best writing tool I've yet to find. Turns 20 min of noodling into 2 hours of jamming. Amazing for practice accompanying.

I almost never buy new and I got this one new. Kijiji ad from a store in toronto has them at $399. I use it all the time.
