Competition Bureau sues Ticketmaster, Live Nation | CBC News

Canada's competition regulator said Thursday it is suing Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation, for allegedly misleading consumers on the prices for sports and other entertainment tickets.

The Competition Bureau said an investigation found that Ticketmaster's advertised prices are deceptive because consumers wind up paying additional fees that are added later in the purchasing process.

The bureau called the practice "drip pricing" and said it results in consumers paying higher prices than advertised. The regulator claimed that Ticketmaster's mandatory fees often inflate the price by more than 20 per cent, and, in some instances, by over 65 per cent.

The bureau said it has filed an application with the Competition Tribunal seeking an end to the alleged deceptive marketing practices and pay a financial penalty.

As a government agency that states this on their site, " as an independent law enforcement agency",
why aren't they just issuing fines outright to these outfits? Suing?

Good point. Might it be because the government would rather the courts make the decision instead of the government having to do it?
Hope those guys are taken to town.

Unfortunately I doubt it. Probably a class action suit and everyone gets a free loaf of bread.

'Tis the nature of antitrust cases. You don't fine monopolies, you sue them for their anti-competitive behaviour.

If anyone thinks the end result of this will be that ticket prices will stay the same and the service charges will be eliminated you are going to be disappointed. The likely end result if this is successful will be that Ticketmaster will have to display the final price upfront. They don't care if they are forced to display the final price upfront. I think they've even done it in the past cause Stub hub did it. It's the artists that would care. They don't want to appear to be gouging anyone.
