I thought it was cool that they used jigs for the most apart as opposed to CNC. And then suddenly all the finishing touches were eyeballed no jigs. Very impressive.

That video is @10 years old if not older. Still no CNC at Hofner, but Dieter Fischer and his little knife (10:03 - 1o:18) have retired.

I was never a fan of the 500/1. I think if Sir Paul didn't use it nobody else would either. I did used to GAS for the larger hollow models (such as the 500/5 aka President bass) but this vid (as impressive as the neck whittling is) seems to have cured me.

Verythin basses are pretty cool, if you can find one. Based on the completely hollow German-made Verithin bass from the 1960s, the "Contemporary" version made in China over the past five years has a block. Not currently in production.
