1965. Note the transitional headstock.
They sound very similar. There are some differences but they are quite subtle. The III is a bit brighter acoustically and that carries over when plugged in. It is also a bit more open and articulate.
The I is just a little bit hotter and darker. It is also quite articulate though. If I don't plug one in right after the other one I don't blink an eye at the sound of the I. It sounds as it should.
The front pick up in the III sounds way better! Hehe.
This is in line with my own perception, but I never had the pleasure of trying a vintage 'Bird. This pickup sounds nothing like Gibson's reissue, which I had for a couple of years and never got to liking..
