When Gibson sued Tokai in Japan (I think it was about the "blatant copy and headstock shape or whatever") they lost the case in a sense of something like "If users cannot distinguish quality that Gibson is Gibson and Tokai is Tokai then you have nothing to complain about".
And from then on in Japan you can have all companies have LP copy looks exactly like original. However that is not the case in US, and they either don't sell there (legally) or they modified look of headstock and button arrangement.
That is my understanding
