Looking for advice on my first wah. I've likely watched 3 hours of videos on YouTube and I'm no closer to a decision. There's likely another thread on this but I haven't been able to find one that's both recent and not about minis.

My use case:
  • Largely mucking about and having fun at home with an occasional jam. No recording, no midi.
  • Likely set up in front of my modeler amp (Spark) for the most part.
  • Want to get some funky sounds and maybe some Cult Love era tones too.
  • No pedal board space concerns
  • Big, size 12.5 feet (are minis too small?)
  • Budget $300 or less.

Thanks!

I think I still have a JD wah somewhere, like new ,probably gigged three or four times (apparently I must have already given it away).

In my opinion any decent wah will be fine for most players. Technique is EVERYthing with this effect.

Start with a GCB From Dunlop. Its classic, simple, cheap, readily available.

Then go from there.

That would be my advice.

It can be quite the personal thing so advising can be difficult but through to process of elimination one can decide what they do and don't like.

I'm not convinced this thread wasn't created so you can remind me how small my feet are, but the advice is sound :)

A switchless wah is the easiest to use: Just step on and off. Morley has been making them for years. The 20/20 Classic is quite good and isn't too big.

I personally don't find mini wahs too small. I prefer them, in fact.

A mini wah is easier to fit on a pedalboard. The Dunlop Cry Baby Mini is readily available (it has a switch, though). The AMT WH-1 is also a good sounding mini wah (with a switch).

A mini switchless wah is hard to find (and more expensive). The Plutoneium Chi-Wah-Wah is the only one that exists, to my knowledge.

What is it, it's always ON ? Or it sees your foot coming down and turns itself on ?
You know those movies where someone crosses an invisible beam and triggers an alarm? It's kinda like that.

There's an optical sensor inside and there's a mechanism that obscures it, but I can't remember if stepping on the pedal allows the light to pass or whether it hides it. Either way, stepping on the pedal engages it. The pedal releases and goes back to the starting position once you step off. (There's a spring mechanism in place.)

Nothing to add except that I applaud the OP for not asking "What wah?"
Frankly, I am surprised that no one has yet replied with something like "Walk This Wah (photo of fave wah, link to YT of Aerosmith & Run DMC) or "This Wah (photo of fave wah) Something Wicked Comes" or even "That wah (photo of fave wah) then it's the second wight and a quick weft".

This might be an unpopular opinion and is a bit out of your price range, but it provides a lot more functionality than just wah. I've connected an expression pedal to a Strymon Mobius and used the Filter engine, and it works really well. You can customize your wah a lot by changing the resonance, blending the dry signal, as well as customizing the range of sweep on the expression pedal itself.

Add to that some great tremolo, vibe, rotary, and other modulation effects, and it is a nice addition to your arsenal. The pre/post routing in the pedal allows you to have the wah in front of your drives while the other effects can be after.

If you don’t know what you’re looking for in a wah I suggest starting with the Dunlop 535Q. It has a couple adjustments so you can mess around with different sounds without needing to buy four or five different pedals in the hope of finding the right one.

Optionally, the Dime Wah is basically a 535Q with slightly more functionality.

Wah! Huh! Good god y'all! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Say it again…
